Bhante Dhammavaro's email: dhammavaro@live.com Buddha’s teaching is known for its ability to help us to reduce or eliminate our sufferings, in this difficult times of financial troubles, industrial layoffs, staff retrenchments, job uncertainties, credit card woes, terrorist attacks, family problems, separation and divorces, physical illnesses, emotional problems, rampant epidemics, …… there seems no end to these ills. How can we apply Buddha’s teaching and go through these turbulent times and live calmly in spite of these adversities?

Bhante Dhammavaro's email: dhammavaro@live.com Lay people who have faith in the Triple Gem, when they meet up with Buddhism, some of them admiring the Triple Gem so much that they change drastically from their previous worldly behaviour and start to take on wrong spiritual rites and rituals and adhere to non Buddhist practices, and even change their dresses or discussion topics so much that they veer to the extreme, or even criticizing their friends and family members who don’t take up the Buddhist practice, they are too eager to show the world that they are a good person and a real Buddhist now. In Buddhist practice it is not like that, a Buddhist still live normally and inconspicuously outwardly, but inwardly you change your view and behaviour and adopt the teaching of the Buddha and apply them in your daily life.

Bhante Dhammavaro's email: dhammavaro@live.com The Buddhist world system is different from the other religions; it is broadly divided into three worlds; i.e.; the Desire world (Kama loka), the Form world (Rupa loka), and the Formless world (Arupa loka). Beings that we meet are mostly from the Desire world, they range from beings in the deepest hells to the radiant celestial beings. The Form world and Formless world can only be accessed through meditation.

In the Buddhist holy path it is equally importance that one must start with the practice of virtue or morality (sila), follows by the practice of samatha meditation (samadhi), and then follows by the practice of contemplative insight (pañña). Even if you have the perfection (parami) from past lives, you still must engage yourself in these trainings.

The Buddha’s teaching and path of liberation are contained in the four noble truths. The Buddha is not the inventor of this teaching, he discovered it, and he described it as being an old discarded city with its houses, gardens and avenues all intact. He refers to his teaching like the medicine for the sick. We are tormented by endless suffering, shedding much tear filling the four oceans until they are full to the brim.

Mind training consists of two areas, the Tranquility (Samatha) meditation and the Contemplation (Vipassana) meditation. Samatha means mental tranquility, when mental purity is attained through samatha, it is very sharp and see thing as it is clearly, the developed mind then abandons lust and so the mind is free of entanglement.

The Blessed One’s position on the creator God is one of non-approval. He said this in Jataka: “If there exists some Lord all powerful to fulfill in every creature bliss or woe, and action good or ill, that Lord is stained with sin. Man does but works his will.”(Mahabodhi Jataka, no.528)
